High Winds Ravage The Panhandle(April 16, 2003)Tornado Watches, Tornado Warnings, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and generally bad weather has plagued the Texas Panhandle and Western Oklahoma on both April 15 and 16, 2003. We'll provide completely updated information as soon as the storm is over. When the first picture (below) was snapped, winds were still blowing in excess of 50 mph. at the KBKH-FM studio and transmitter site.
Above: One of the two C-Band satellite dishes that were lost during the afternoon of April 15 and night of April 16, 2003 at the radio station. As you can see, the pole didn't bend or break but was, rather, "uprooted" by heavy winds during the storm.
Above: The same satellite dish about three hours later (after the winds have subsided, somewhat). Note the second dish in the background. Have you ever heard the old saying that "The more expensive it is, the more extensive the damage shall be"? The 12 foot fiberglass dish was the first down and was totally ripped from it's polar mount (seen flipped over in the background).
Above: A close-up of the second dish showing details of how the polar mount was literally ripped from the back of the dish.
Above: A turnbuckle that was straightened out after the (recently) completed roof of our transmitter building suddenly lifted 20 or more feet into the air and went "sailing by" directly into one of the bottom guy wires. The good news? The anchors have now been tested and pass with flying colors!
Above: The roof that went "sailing by" and ripped the turnbuckle from the guy wire can be seen in the background as well as the walls that were also "wind stripped" from the still standing framework of the transmitter building.
Above: Roofing material stripped from the garage roof. Note that the metal is actually torn and not just "letting go". |
